Do I Need To Begin Drawing Social Security To Apply For Medicare?

by | Jul 21, 2022

If you are wondering if you need to begin drawing Social Security to apply for Medicare, the answer is no. You do not need to start drawing Social Security to apply for Medicare. If you want to only apply for Medicare, you can!

Here is how:

  • Go to the SSA.gov website
  • Click on the box that says Medicare
  • Once on the Medicare portion of the website, scroll about halfway down the page
  • When you see a big blue box that says “Apply for Medicare Only”, click it!

This is where you’ll create your SSA.gov account, if you don’t have one already, and complete your Medicare application.

One thing should remember before you begin your application:

You will want to decide whether you want both Part A and Part B or just Part A. If you currently have employer coverage and are going to keep that coverage, you will just want to apply for Part A.
