Need Medicare Help in Shelbyville, TN? What to Know During Annual Enrollment

by | Sep 19, 2026

Maybe you’ve been happy with your Medicare coverage all year.

Your doctors take it. Your prescriptions have been manageable. You haven’t had any major problems.

Then fall arrives, and you receive information about your 2027 coverage.

A copay is changing. A benefit looks different. Maybe you’ve started taking a new prescription this year or you’re now seeing a specialist you weren’t seeing when you chose your current plan.

And suddenly you’re wondering:

“Is this enough of a change that I should look at other Medicare plans?”

That’s one of the most common questions we help people answer during Medicare Annual Enrollment.

And the answer isn’t automatically yes.

For many people in Shelbyville and Bedford County, the Medicare plan they already have may continue to work very well for 2027. For others, a change involving doctors, prescriptions, costs or healthcare needs may make comparing other options worthwhile.

The tricky part is figuring out which changes actually matter to you.

That’s where working with an experienced Medicare agent can make Annual Enrollment much simpler.

Rather than trying to determine on your own whether a $10 copay increase matters, whether your specialist in Murfreesboro still participates, or how a new prescription affects your costs, you can sit down with someone who works with Medicare every day and review those things together.

And sometimes the answer at the end of that conversation is refreshingly simple:

“You’re still in good shape. There’s no reason to change anything.”

Other times, there’s a good reason to take a closer look.

Either way, the purpose of an Annual Enrollment review shouldn’t be to find you a new plan.

It should be to find out whether you need one.

So, What Should Happen During a Medicare Annual Enrollment Review?

For 2027 coverage, Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period runs from:

October 15 – December 7, 2026

During this period, Medicare beneficiaries can make certain changes to Medicare Advantage and Part D prescription drug coverage for the following year.

But when you sit down with an agent, we believe the conversation should start with you, not a stack of new plans.

What’s working well?

What’s frustrating you?

What changed this year?

Are there doctors you absolutely want to keep?

Are you taking any new medications?

Do you regularly leave Bedford County for medical care?

Those answers give us a much better starting point for reviewing your 2027 coverage.

Bring Your Medicare Mail — We’ll Help You Make Sense of It

Let’s start with that stack of paperwork.

If you’re enrolled in Medicare Advantage or a standalone Part D prescription drug plan, your plan sends you information each fall explaining changes to your coverage for the following year.

One important document is your Annual Notice of Change, often called an ANOC.

It can explain changes involving things such as:

  • Premiums
  • Deductibles
  • Copays
  • Prescription drug coverage
  • Pharmacy networks
  • Other benefits

Don’t assume that every change means you need another plan.

Imagine your specialist copay changes.

If you see a specialist once a year, the difference may have relatively little impact.

If you see multiple specialists regularly, that same change could deserve much more attention.

The question isn’t simply what changed. It’s how the change affects you.

Your Doctors May Be More Important Than the Plan’s Extra Benefits

For many Medicare beneficiaries, keeping trusted doctors is one of their highest priorities.

That’s why doctors should be part of your Medicare review before you get distracted by all the extra benefits being advertised during Annual Enrollment.

If you’re considering Medicare Advantage, provider networks can affect which physicians and facilities you can use and what you pay.

And for someone living in Bedford County, there’s another important consideration.

Your doctors may not all be in Bedford County.

Perhaps your primary care physician is in Shelbyville.

But your cardiologist may be in Murfreesboro.

Your surgeon could be in Nashville.

You might see another specialist in Tullahoma.

That’s normal—but it means your Medicare review needs to account for your whole healthcare picture, not just the doctors closest to your home.

Before your appointment, make a list of:

  • Your primary care doctor
  • Specialists
  • Preferred hospitals
  • Other important healthcare facilities

And include providers you see outside Bedford County.

Your Prescriptions Need a Fresh Look Too

Next, update your medication list.

Medicare drug plans use formularies, or lists of covered medications. Costs and coverage requirements can differ among plans.

Even if your plan hasn’t changed dramatically, your medications may have.

Perhaps your doctor added a medication this year.

Maybe you stopped taking another.

Or your dosage changed.

That’s why your 2027 Medicare review should use your current medication list—not the one you gave your agent several years ago.

Include:

  • Medication name
  • Dosage
  • Frequency
  • Brand or generic
  • Preferred pharmacy

An agent can then use that information when helping you compare the Medicare insurance options they represent.

Don’t Forget Your Pharmacy

Your preferred pharmacy matters too.

Prescription costs can vary depending on the plan and pharmacy you use.

For someone living in a smaller community, convenience deserves consideration alongside cost.

Maybe another pharmacy could save you some money.

Great.

But if it requires a substantial drive every month, that difference may or may not be worth it to you.

This is where a Medicare comparison becomes more than numbers on a screen.

The coverage has to make sense in your actual life.

A $0 Premium Doesn’t Tell You the Whole Story

This is one of the biggest things we’d want someone to understand during Annual Enrollment.

You’ll probably see advertisements emphasizing Medicare Advantage plans with $0 monthly premiums.

That can sound pretty appealing.

And a $0-premium plan may indeed be worth considering.

But $0 premium does not mean $0 healthcare costs.

Depending on the plan, you may still have costs when you use healthcare, such as:

  • Specialist copays
  • Hospital cost-sharing
  • Outpatient procedures
  • Diagnostic imaging
  • Physical therapy
  • Prescription medications
  • Other medical services

Medicare Advantage plans also have an annual maximum out-of-pocket limit for covered Part A and Part B services.

That’s why we believe a Medicare review should look beyond:

“How much is the monthly premium?”

and ask:

“How could this coverage work with the healthcare I actually use?”

What About Dental, Vision, Hearing and Other Benefits?

These benefits can matter.

We just don’t think they should necessarily come first.

Our preferred order for reviewing Medicare Advantage coverage is:

1. Doctors

2. Prescriptions

3. Medical costs

4. Your individual healthcare needs

5. Additional benefits

Once the fundamentals work, then let’s talk about the extras.

If dental, vision, hearing, fitness or another additional benefit is important to you, it absolutely belongs in the comparison.

But an attractive extra benefit shouldn’t distract you from a problem involving an important doctor or medication.

You Don’t Need to Change Medicare Plans Just Because It’s Annual Enrollment

This is something we tell our clients every year.

Annual Enrollment is not an annual requirement to change plans.

It’s an opportunity to review your coverage and make certain changes if you need to.

If your current Medicare coverage is continuing into 2027, your doctors still work with it, your prescriptions are covered appropriately, you’re comfortable with the costs and you’re happy with your benefits, staying where you are may make perfect sense.

At Acuity Health Advisors, we’re completely comfortable ending an annual review with:

“Everything still looks good. Let’s leave it alone.”

You shouldn’t feel like you have to switch plans just because you asked an agent for help.

What If Something Important HAS Changed?

That’s when comparing your options becomes useful.

Maybe:

An important doctor is no longer participating.

Your prescription costs changed significantly.

Your medical copays increased.

Your healthcare needs changed during 2026.

A benefit that’s particularly important to you changed.

Your current plan won’t be available to you next year.

Those are reasons to investigate your options.

They aren’t automatically reasons to switch.

A Medicare agent can help you compare the plans they represent and determine how those alternatives line up with your healthcare needs.

Can an Agent Help Me if They’re Not Located in Shelbyville?

Yes.

And this is something worth explaining because “local Medicare agent” can mean different things to different people.

You may want an agent with an office five minutes from your house.

That’s perfectly reasonable.

But you may simply want someone based in Middle Tennessee who understands the area, answers the phone and remains available after you enroll.

Acuity Health Advisors is located in Murfreesboro, and we serve Medicare beneficiaries throughout Middle Tennessee, including Shelbyville and Bedford County.

We can work with Bedford County clients by:

📞 Phone

We can review Medicare coverage without requiring you to drive to our office.

💻 Virtually

If you prefer an online appointment, that’s an option too.

🤝 In person

If you’d rather sit down face-to-face, you’re welcome to visit our Murfreesboro office.

For many people, having those choices gives them the benefits of a regional relationship without requiring their agent to have an office in their exact ZIP code.

Why Work With an Independent Medicare Agent?

Acuity Health Advisors is an independent insurance agency.

That means we aren’t limited to offering Medicare insurance products from only one insurance company.

We contract with multiple major insurance companies and can help clients compare the Medicare insurance options we represent.

That doesn’t mean we represent every plan available in Bedford County.

We don’t.

But it does mean you can compare options from multiple companies through one agency relationship.

More importantly, we can start with you instead of starting with one particular insurance company.

What Should You Expect From Your Medicare Agent After Enrollment?

Here’s a question people don’t always think to ask until later:

“Can I call you after January 1?”

We think you should know the answer before you enroll.

Maybe something happens at the pharmacy.

Perhaps you receive an insurance-company letter you don’t understand.

You have a question about a benefit.

Or you simply aren’t sure who you need to contact about an issue.

At Acuity, our relationship with clients doesn’t end when an enrollment application is submitted.

We’re still here.

And when Annual Enrollment comes around again next year, we’re still here then too.

That’s one of the reasons we value building long-term relationships with our clients throughout Middle Tennessee.

What Should I Have Ready When I Call?

You don’t need to organize every piece of Medicare mail you’ve received since turning 65. 😄

Start with a few basics:

Your current Medicare insurance information

An updated list of prescriptions

Your preferred pharmacy

A list of important doctors and specialists

Any questions or concerns about your current coverage

And if there’s a particular letter or Annual Notice of Change that’s confusing you, keep that handy too.

We’ll go from there.

Is There a Cost to Get Medicare Help From Acuity?

There is no additional cost to you for using Acuity Health Advisors to help you enroll in a Medicare insurance plan we represent.

Insurance companies typically compensate agents for enrollments in Medicare plans they represent, and CMS regulates agent and broker compensation for Medicare Advantage and Part D products.

So if you’ve been putting off calling because you’re worried you’ll receive a consulting bill from us, you don’t need to. 😊
